Did you know that “cello” is actually a shortened name, and that this instrument is actually named “violoncello?” A member of the strings family, the cello has 4 strings just like its higher-pitched cousins, the violin and the viola. But because of its larger size, the cello is played upright, held up on the floor by an “end pin,” with the cello’s “lower bout” (or lower part of the frame) resting between the cellist’s knees, the “upper bout” (or top part of the frame) leaning against the cellist’s chest, and with the “scroll” peeking out from behind the cellist’s left ear. Perfect for students who are 8 years old and up, the cello’s larger size means it’s capable of a deeper range of notes, and its lush, rich sound makes it a favorite for solos in orchestral works, movie scores, and pop songs alike!
The cello is a gorgeous instrument and a symphony darling, and it’s an important option for families to think about for their child if having a strong musical foundation rooted in the classics is important to them. We use a “whole-learning” approach to teaching cello, which means that our teachers combine note-reading with Suzuki methodology to make sure that our students receive the best foundation in theoretical and technical skills while still focusing on auditory development. We make sure their musical toolbox is chock full so that they have everything they need in order to be successful. Because we strike this balance, taking the best of both methodologies, our students progress more quickly and see deeper musical growth as the learn to play and express themselves creatively on their cello! Our teachers make sure our cello students learn the right skills at the right time and in the right order, offering support, positivity and encouragement all along the way!
