If you’ve got a young music-lover who has been asking for music lessons or who is naturally curious and is magnetically drawn to music, the piano is a great first instrument option to explore! Best suited for children who are at least 4.5 years old, the thing that makes the piano such a great choice for young, developing musicians is its strength as a foundational instrument. For this reason, we also strongly recommend the piano to students who are interested in learning additional instruments at some point in the future as well; having a background in piano lessons makes learning to play a second or third instrument so much easier!

The piano technically belongs to the “rhythm instrument” family, alongside of the drums and other percussion instruments. This is because when you press a piano key, it triggers a little “hammer” inside the piano, which then strikes the strings to produce a tone. Unlike the drums, though, the piano is a “pitched percussion instrument.” This means that it can also produce a variety of tones, ranging from high sounds to deep sounds. When these sounds are strung together and played in a sequence or played together simultaneously, it creates beautiful melodies and harmonies.

Investing in a piano can be a big decision, but you don’t have to own one to start your lessons. Many of our beginning level students take their lessons with us on digital pianos or starter keyboards. Keyboards can be a great way to get started with your lessons experience.
