Have you been exploring the idea of viola lessons for your child? We teach viola lessons to students 4.5 years and up. The viola, like the violin and the cello, is a member of the strings instrument family. First coming to popularity in the 18th century, the viola is the slightly larger, slightly louder cousin to the violin, and its sound is a little deeper, a little richer, and a little more resonant. Many famous classical music composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach, were known to favor the viola when composing for string quartets, ensembles, and chamber groups. Their orchestral compositions often highlight this mid-range instrument, allowing it to be a focal point.
The viola is a fantastic instrument choice for students who are excited by music and dedicated to learning but who are also looking for something unique, something different. It’s a less commonly chosen instrument than the violin, but sometimes “the road less traveled” is the one that makes all the difference! Because the viola does not have frets (unlike the guitar or the ukulele), training a young violist’s ear to recognize and replicate accurate pitch is of the utmost importance. We blend the Suzuki method (for ear-training) with the traditional method of note-reading and focus heavily on proper playing technique so that our students develop good habits and have all of the tools they will need in order to be successful as they learn to play the viola.
Whether you’re interested in a classical approach, learning pop covers, or learning a more fiddle/folk style of playing, our teachers can help tailor a viola program to suit your interests! We offer viola lessons in Sherman Oaks to students of all ages. While we specialize in lessons for beginners, we offer intermediate and advanced level lessons as well. Whether you’re starting from scratch or wanting to take your existing skills to the next level, we can help you!
